The cummins is a good choice. Pretty simple engine. The 383 with a turbo is a good choice also. As far as a trans. I would consider a probuilt TH400 with a Gear Vendors overdrive or an Allison. You will want to gear it for towing. Maybe some 4.10:1 gears. Keep in mind small block Chevy parts are a dime a dozen. GM Performance Parts sells a high torque 383 crate motor. If you want mondo torque at low RPM look into a 500 cadillac motor. Parts are available from Cadillac Motorsports Development.

Stick with diesel more torque less fuel consumption and maintenance. Since you have a 4x4, gear the rear end for highway since that will be most of your pulling! rape an old chevy dually for your rear end, put lockers on the front for more rigourous conditions! BTW head out to SEMA and see if you can do a trade off!!T3 and ??? for an awesome tow vehicle and maybe a v-8 conversion for your van!!

That is awesome....
I bet that swap would cost a fortune....
What would you need the whole electical, motor and tranny, computer and all?

JD, I don't think there is much computer involved in a 12-valve cummins. Tons of people are swapping them into stuff...
